Friends, I am asking for your assistance in reaching out TODAY to our elected state representatives, asking them to oppose HB 1035 and HB 3172, which would allow discrimination against the LGBTQ community and religious minorities. This evening we will be observing Maundy Thursday, the night of Jesus’ betrayal; it is also the beginning of Passover. Both of these events mark the power of government to oppress people of faith and to persecute them. Today the Texas State Legislature is moving toward the adoption of two bills which will do the same, HB 1035 and HB 3172. In the guise of “religious liberty,” these bills will allow discrimination against the LGBTQ community and religious minorities, including progressive Christians. As Rabbi Oren Hayon, the senior rabbi of our neighbor Congregation Emanu el, has written, “ Our spiritual imagination understands the Israelites’ suffering as having included both physical torment and spiritual bondage; the core request which Moses makes of Pharaoh is: “Let my people go...to worship our God” [Exodus 3:18]. The history of the Jewish people has been marked by traumatic times when our religious beliefs were made subordinate to others’ and our communities were targeted for discrimination. American liberty, and the protection of the First Amendment, has provided a reassuring bulwark against religious bias within the law; unfortunately, two bills which are currently being heard in the Texas Legislature threaten to undermine this vital American value and undermine religious protection for minority communities.” Today I am encouraging you to contact your state representative and ask them to oppose HB 1035 and HB 3172. This important task can be completed in about three minutes by following these steps: 1. Find your state representative here: https://wrm.capitol.texas.gov/home 2. Look up the toll-free number to call their office: https://wrm.capitol.texas.gov/home 3. This website provides some helpful language you may use in your brief conversation with the representative’s office to explain your opposition to these bills: https://wrm.capitol.texas.gov/home Your call WILL make a difference. Our elected officials must hear that their constituents oppose these bills and that our community stands in opposition to legislation that could weaken the First Amendment’s protections against legally-protected religious discrimination. Thank you for joining me in this important work. May Christ’s witness of love flow through our homes and our congregation, and our nation.

VI. Wisdom: The Voice of God Ninety percent of what’s wrong with you could be cured with a hot bath, says God through the manhole covers, but you want magic, to win the lottery you never bought a ticket for. (Tenderly, the monks chant, embrace the suffering.) The voice never panders, offers no five-year plan, no long-term solution, no edicts from a cloudy white beard hooked over ears. It is small and fond and local. Don’t look for your initials in the geese honking overhead or to see through the glass even darkly. It says the most obvious shit, i.e. Put down that gun, you need a sandwich. Mary Karr, Tropic of Squalor (2018). Karr is the Peck Professor of Literature at Syracuse University
